Picture Stories is a website constructed in 2002. The purpose of the site was twofold. First, I was interested in exploring the convergence of written text, photography, animation and audio, made possible with Flash, a software package first introduced in 1996. Second, I was interested in experimenting with new digital media in order to expand conceptions of documentary photography and extend the potential distribution of documentary work via the Internet.

I was inspired by websites like Picture Projects and Journal E (stories from the original Journal E are now available at Musarium).

I was assisted in the design and programming of Picture Stories by Mauricio Arango, who was working as my graduate research assistant while earning his MFA at the University of Minnesota. Mauricio's award-winning work can be seen by clicking here.
